Also great catfish & chicken, collard greens, corn, potatoes & gravy, home made hot rolls and cornbread. They also had some gelatin pudding but were running low when we got there. There was more offered but I can’t remember what. You go through a buffet line. They don’t claim “All you can eat”, but it’s plenty for most folks.  The rest of the week it’s a dollar cheaper. Same fare. They open at 7:30am close at 5pm. except they close between 10 and 11am to get ready for lunch. They are closed on Saturday and Monday. Open on Sunday.]

Bella Vista, 5801 S. Western, 631-1717, I had dinner last week at a little family-run Italian restaurant called Bella Vista. It is on the west side of Western on the corner of SW 58th Street. Competitive prices, delicious sauces, generous helpings, and a sweet serving staff. The reason I went in there was because they had the Breathe Easy sticker on the door. (Peggy) & We have been eating at Bella Vista for about 2 years, a little slow, but well worth the wait. Try the spaghetti with the arabiatta sauce, maybe too spicy for some, but tasty. Bunnie’s Onion Burgers 5020 N. Meridian 949 2889 (Jerry Lee) Three of my four grown children live out of state. The first thing all of them, and their spouses, want to do when they get to OKC, is go to Bunnie’s Onion Burgers for onion burgers and chili \cheeze\fries. Saturday afternoon, our daughter, Anna Marie, was on her way to our home but could see she would not be here in time to go to Bunnie’s before they closed. She called her mom on her cell phone and asked her to go to Bunnie’s and get some, so she wouldn’t miss her treat. I asked my wife to get me some chili. After my taste test, I have to give Bunnie’s a Five Star rating on her chili. I had eaten Bunnie’s chili many times but usually with a hamburger on the side. This time, I ate chili only and paid more attention to the taste. I loved it.  Bunnie makes her own chili. She makes chili the old fashioned way. (No beans, with enough seasoning to make it almost too hot, but not too hot)  BTW, they use fresh, lean, hamburger meat in their burgers. The hamburger buns are hot and moist but not greasy. The french fries are made from fresh cut potatoes( not frozen). You add the condiments of you choice, and the amount, at your table.

Steve and his wife, Donna, and mother in law, Nila Ragsdale & master barbeque chef, Albert Finley, operate Chisholm’s. Even though it is a (Mom & Pop) operation, Steve is no stranger to big business. Steve is the man that started Crockett’s Barbeque about twenty years ago. It grew into 10 locations and was quite successful. Steve said it was more than he wanted to do, trying to control the quality of all the locations and he sold out to his partners. Chisholm’s is open Monday thru Friday, 10 till 2. Open Friday nights till 8pm. Steve and Donna don’t have to worry about somebody else looking out for their interests. They devote full attention to this business.]

I heard their ad on the radio last night and decided to give them a try, after I called and found out they were smoke free. I ordered an 8oz. rib eye steak for $6.99. The waitress came over to my table before bringing it to me and asked if I had ordered a rib eye. I said yes. She then said the cook had made a mistake and had put a prime rib dinner for  her. I told her it would be OK because I almost ordered the prime rib anyway. She brought it and it was great. The owner came over to my table and said the meal was on the house because they had made a mistake. I would not take a free meal because it was very good. The prime rib was sliced thin but was well worth the money. If you are eating on an expense account, it might not suit you but I will definitely go back. They are open from 7am till 9pm Monday through Saturday. Sundays 7 till 3. You can order breakfast anytime. The owner’s name is Sam. His wife’s name is Dina.  Papa T.

Incredible Pizza- It is in the old Wal-Mart building on Northwest Highway. It is copied after Chuckie Cheese and CiCi's Pizza but much better and for teenagers! It is a training ground for future casino patrons. Lots of bells and whistles. The food was outstanding, pizza, pasta, desert, and salad bar. (all you want to eat and drink) They had an indoor go-cart track and bowling, bumper cars, plus a midway like at the carnival. Instead of tokens we bought a credit card for each grand child. The fees were from 30 cents to 1 dollar. Senior citizen costs $4.99 for meal. I noticed several construction workers eating lunch there. They are grabbing somebody's business. The place was packed. and their parking lot was only about half full. The 2 grandchildren had a blast. The part I liked were the dinning areas; one was quiet for family dinning, one was decorated like the inside of a gymnasium and We liked the fifties dinner best. The theme throughout is fifties and they play fifties music. There is no doubt about their smoking policy. They have several signs in the front of the building saying, Incredibly Smoke Free. The thin pizza was the thinnest I have ever had. that's the way I like it. I wanted a thin crust Supreme and they made it up for me. All the other pizza in the buffet looked good.    Papa T gives his Seal of Approval for the food and prices. The two grandchildren also give it a thumbs up.

Nonna's Bakery and Cafe, 8601 S. Western, Oklahoma City [great for special occasions. Their food and service are top notch. You should try their desserts. In fact, it's worth the trip just to try one of their desserts. My favorite drink is ‘Peach Tea’. The lady who owns it will probably come by your table and say hello. Speaking of your table, it will have a cloth cover with cloth napkins. Real cow butter, no margarine, real half and half,  no Cofeemate. She also has her own green house and grows her own vegetables. She grows her own tomatoes with no soil. Nonna's also sells tomatoes you can take home. They are as good as you'll ever eat.  Her food may have a slight Italian leaning. Nonna, is the name of the grandmother of the owner's husband.  Many of the original Nonna's recipes are used. Nonna was from Krebs, Oklahoma. Most of us know that Krebs is a little town just outside of McAlester, well known for good Italian food. For several years, Nonna’s only served the noon meal but they are now open for evenings on the week-ends. For week-end evenings they recommend reservations but you do not have to have one. Nonna's is quite a place. I have met the owner. She is a classy lady. She also has an adjoining building where she sells some upscale women's wear, cosmetics, special seasonings, etc. It is a place any woman would enjoy.  She has another business where she grows prize winning tomatoes without soil, in a green house. You can also buy them by the bag in the restaurant.  $1.39 a pound. Nonna is the name of her late mother in law, of Italian heritage, from Krebs, Oklahoma.]

She said when they first went smoke free, they lost about a $100 of business a day for about 2 weeks. Then the business started to climb and now their business has tripled. I have tried the Seared Caribbean Jerk Chicken sandwich, the Portobella Mushroom sandwich, and the Thai Broccoli salad and all were wonderful. Their desserts are incredible, especially the Chocolate Mocha Cupcake.

TIREMAN JOE'S CAFE LLC 2216 N. Portland (Jerry Lee) [Under new ownership-used to be MOM'S EARLY BIRD RESTAURANT] [I finally found my dream café. Down home cookin’ with no smoke. They are open 6am til 2pm Monday through Friday. Sat. 6 till 8pm. My wife and I had breakfast there at about 11am today. Mom was not in but I did get a chance to talk to the cook. He has worked there for about 4 years. Mom has owned it for a year. He said business is better now than when it was a smoky joint. It used to be called Shirley’s. I also talked with a customer that told me that the first day they went non smoking, they had hardly any business. I can understand that because when it was Shirley’s it was a real dive. (Their food was good but smelled like a pool hall).  At first Mom thought she couldn’t make a go of it as a smoke free café. He said several of the non smoking customers offered her encouragement to stick with her guns. He said most of the smokers came back because they liked the food and new customers started trickeling in.  He said the smoking coffee drinkers have to congregate someplace else. We ordered pork chops & eggs with biscuits & gravy, hash browns, and a large Dr. Pepper. Our bill was $11.76. (No need to go to Jimmy’s Egg and put up with the smoke).  I noticed something on the menu I haven’t seen in years. It’s a Hot Steak Sandwich with mashed potatoes and salad.  I just know it would be as good as the ones that were sold years ago.  P.S. The customer in Mom's said they don't cut the onions for an order of onion rings till you place your order.
